Great article! As a father of a grown daughter and a husband. I have always attempted to deliver the same message as your father. Due to my occupation, I always reinforced the importance of being situationally aware. I remember walking with a female friend in Cabo, she said; "I feel so safe with you." I thanked her but didn't put down my guard, because I took responsibility for her protection. So here I am a guy with more muscles than most and yet I let my first wife physically and verbally abuse me. How does this happen? I didn't let down my guard. I just took it for many years. We need to be careful, easy to say, and harder to do when the abuse is coming from someone you know, more so someone you have loved. I don't have all the answers. But as Tanya pointed out, you have to be aware, you have to be prepared. It's hard when emotions get in the way. I hope we can all find the realization that we deserve to be safe from abuse or harm and the first step is being prepared to protect yourself like Tanya's father tried to prepare her for the reality of living in this world.
