I agree with you. The author, Jude Ellison is just using the point that Caitlyn does not want individuals who are male to female trans to compete in female sports, as a basis to attack Caitlyn as a individual because she is republican. That is clearly more upsetting to Jude than individuals who want to participate in competitive sports.
